Why are there Unions?

A Reminder of Why There’s a SAG (or now SAG-AFTRA)

Gloria Stuart’s acceptance speech yesterday, receiving a well deserved Ralph Morgan Award at the annual Hollywood Membership Meeting. Stuart, 99, is SAG Member 873, and is the last surviving member of SAG’s original Board of Directors.
Why did she get involved? Variety quotes her about her early work:
“I was a contract player at Universal, so you had to be ready at 8 a.m. promptly — which meant you’d have to be in hair and makeup at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.” Stuart noted. “Then worked til 7 or 8 at night, so actors like me were being taken advantage of.”
