"Fences" on Broadway and possibly on its way to film

Denzel Washington has given his tentative committment to starring in and possibly playing a larger production role in the film version of "Fence", according to Playbill Magazine.

Washington told reporters before there is a film inked, he will do the stage version first.

The Broadway version is scheduled to begin previews April 14 at the Cort Theatre,.

Fences is the 1987 Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning play by Wilson — one play in a cycle of ten about the African-American experience in the 20th century.

Fences takes place over eight years from 1957 to 1965. Washington stars as Troy Maxson, a Pittsburgh sanitation worker who once dreamed of a baseball career, but was too old when the major leagues finally admitted black players.

According to production notes, "As he faces off against the racial barrier at work and his own disappointments, Troy also grapples with his son, Cory, over the teenager's hope for a football scholarship and with his wife, Rose (Viola Davis), who confronts Troy over a child he has fathered with another woman."

Playwrite August Wilson has refused prevous offers from Hollywood for a film version of his work, saying he was holding out for an African American director and the right cast.

LA Production on the rebound, up 25%

Production in Los Angeles is up over 25% for the quarter, according to the Los Angeles Times. Commercial production is up 60%, television 19% and feature films 9%. The Times reports: "A robust TV pilot season, a substantially improved climate for shooting commercials and the state's new film incentive helped deliver a modicum of good news to Los Angeles' beleaguered production economy in the first quarter. Overall on-location filming activity for feature films, television and commercials jumped 25% during the first three months of 2010 compared with the same period last year, according to data from FilmL.A. Inc., the nonprofit group that handles permits for on-location filming for L.A. and unincorporated areas of the county."

The entertainment industry is worth about $120 billion dollars a year, about half based in LA. Location shooting and tax incentives have drawn location filming from other parts of the country, from Canada and Mexico. Advertising is attracted to LA over traditional NYC and Chicago locals because of the incentives. Pilot season is the hottest on record, with expansion of cable, development money from the corporations that own the networks and the gamble of NBC, FOX and CW expansion slots as prime time returns to 8 to 11 PM 7 days a week.

Agent: Pilot Season “Most Competitive Ever”

A four page analysis of casting trends, penned by a major agent as a message to his clients, has been making its way around the net for the past several days. A number of people have sent it to us, and it’s certainly worth a look.
One of the regulars here who sent us a link offered this comment:
I think it’s eye opening about what is happening in our business this year, and for years to come.  I’ve always felt the extreme passions of those with MF have much more to do with their frustration that their careers have stalled and they desperately want to attack someone for that.  It’s has the same situation  as when the vaudeville circuits, the big houses, began to fail and a huge shift from stage to film edged out many of those whose material could never make the change.  Many famous players, and those coming up dismissed this ‘film’ thing as a minor challenge, (ala new media?) only to see it rapidly take over. I’m glad I’m closer to the end of a career rather than the beginning.

THE SUPERHERO DIARIES opens Saturday April 10th at 1030PM. Tickets are $15. Opening night is a champagne performance. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 10PM, Apr 10 - May 1. There is a Monday night Indurstry performance at 1030PM on April 26th.

Digital Future, Video Past; Mr. Wells Goes to Washington

Netflix, Redbox, Hulu, iTunes…they're all competing to win the digital horse race.  And, we go on a tour of the video store, that old gray mare they're helping to put out to pasture. Plus, producer John Wells goes to Washington to protest the NBC-Comcast merger. Matt Holzman guest hosts.


Cantor Exchange, a planned futures market on potential box office receipts, is being called "unbridled gambling" by the Motion Picture Association of America. They fear that it would be too easy for insiders to hedge against a movie or for one. They also find that the risk factor may undermine the ability to finance legitimate and worthwhile films.

80% of "Avatar"'s market came from 3-D screens. 70% of "Alice" came from 3-D screens. So prices are going to go up because people have shown they are willing to pay more and that, in turn, drives up box-office numbers.

The loss of long time film critics by "Variety" and other publications is raising ire in the industry, but 80% of people who decide to pick a film say that critics have no impact on the decision. Of those who say they were influenced to see a film, 70% say that influence came from a friend or relative. 25% say the trailer or advertising. Are film critics relevant?

The announcement of the death of the video store is premature. They live on and will continue to do so, but in forms and places that will bare little resemblance to Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

Ballet

The following is a press release:

A double scoop of delicious dancing was served last week at the City of Las Vegas's Reed Whipple Center and at UNLV's Judy Bayley Theatre. Some of Las Vegas's most entertaining, innovative, and often neglected, dance concerts are presented regularly by the dance department.  Local dance lovers should avail themselves of these outstanding performances.

The university's production, "Unforgettable," featured students, faculty members and guest artists in residence.  Not all the works were unforgettable but some did do justice to the title.   Christopher Fleming's, "Far Rockaway," was a pure classical ballet, on point, reminiscent, but not imitative, of Balanchine's "Rubies" and "Who cares." His choreography took the dancers beyond their usual limits and made them all look like ballerinas.

"No Loose Ends, by the gifted chorographer Cathy Allen, had its 13 dancers lined across the stage in a straight line from which individuals and couples moved out of to tell their tales.  Perhaps, the evenings high point was Ernesta Corvino's  "Works of Heart" the premise of which was paintings such as Gainborough's "Blue Boy," interpreted with wit and elegance by Ms. Corvino.  Works by Rembrandt, Munch and Boticelli were also portrayed in movement.  In the finale they all joined together in a delightful romp

"Nevermore" and "Kinetic Structure," by Mike Esperanza and Louis Kavouras, respectively, showed promise but resorted to too much running.  Kovouras's "Sea of Stars" was ho hum with the familiar gimmick of having dancers wave their arms around while holding small battery fed lights in their hands.

In April UNLV's dance department will collaborate with the famous KNSU South Korean dance troupe in four performances.  This is a not-to-be-missed event.  For ticket information call 895-3827.

WE ARE UNION

Wages and working conditions are the foundation of any union. They keep us safe and pay a fair wage. Collective bargaining is how we negotiate to secure the foundation our members need (union wages are a floor, not a set rate or ceiling). 


Right now the collective bargaining rights of many of our brothers and sisters are under attack in Wisconsin and at least two other states. 


Quite simply, we cannot afford for the recession and resulting budget deficits to be used as an excuse to weaken union protections and our ability to represent each other as brothers and sisters to negotiate for safety, security and a fair wage. 


I urge SAG members to do all we can to support our brothers and sisters in Wisconsin and elsewhere. 


Do not for a moment think that this is not your fight. 


We also have a target painted on our backs by the same forces behind any attempt to weaken our fellow unions in the public sector.


More Than 35 Years of Union Activism


Working conditions also led to the birth of the Nevada Branch. While on the set of the 1971 James Bond movie Diamonds are Forever, SAG members from Nevada were exposed to conditions they considered abusive. With the help of National, they stood up and changes were made. That passion led to the organic growth of the Nevada Branch, officially added to the Guild’s branch system 35 years ago.


More Than 20 Years of Guild Service


At our membership meeting in March, we honored the longest-serving president in Nevada SAG history, Steve Dressler. As most of you know, I worked with Steve on the council when I was Branch president and as your elected representative on the National Board of Directors. While he modestly does not advertise it, Steve pulled no punches in talking with staff, officers and National Board members as he worked effectively to represent Nevada’s membership.


Together, we helped bring an office and local executives to Nevada to expand our background zone, to raise national recognition of the needs of all Branches operating under the federally mandated limitations of “right-to-work” laws, and to keep Nevada high on the radar of board members from Los Angeles, New York and other Branches. Most of the work of a Branch president is done in committees, in sidebar conversations and in more paperwork than most of us can appreciate.



Merger


Many members have asked if we are closer to a merger with AFTRA. Yes, but that does not mean it will be a done deal.


The national presidents and the boards of both unions are committed to the need to join together as the power wielded by management increases, technology blurs the lines and opposition to, or a misunderstanding of, unions spreads in geography and numbers.


In truth, when change comes, it will most likely take the form of a new union with its roots and history in both Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.


But When?


As soon as possible is the best answer, but that could, for legal, logistical and political reasons, be a year or years away. The unions need to continue in the best interests of their membership as we focus on joint negotiations, organizing in a difficult marketplace and providing for the needs of our members. And as occurred the last two times the unions worked to join together, the will of the membership as ballots hit the mailboxes will leave any future uncertain up until the final moments.


What Can I Do?


For now, focus on helping President Grant, our Executive Director Steve Clinton and your council build the Nevada Branch and continue to keep us active and strong.


Support Local Employment


Support – within the limits of the SAG rules we are bound to as members of a union, such as Rule One, which states that you may not work non-union – all Nevada-based production and talent industry-based companies. Show them SAG is on their side. Encourage them to use SAG talent and sign SAG contracts. This includes working only through SAG franchised agents. Every dime a non-union agent (or manager working incorrectly as an agent) earns is a dime that discourages our growing union agent pool from following the rules and supporting our union.


Encourage SAG Signatory Status


You have the power to nudge employers toward becoming signatory to our contracts. When we had a physical office, there were seven local signatories. Today we have none. True, in many cases those companies used primarily out-of-town talent, but then so do films, industrials and commercials coming to town. The opportunity for locals can only grow if we are ready and willing to work, and if the work opportunities are there in the first place. A first step is to increase the amount of union work on the plate.


Be Prepared and Professional on the Set


Do the job you are hired to do and do it to the best of your professional training, ability and desire.


Encourage Others to Join the Nevada Branch


The reality is that there is strength, financing and political voice in numbers. Qualified professional talent, particularly those in the younger age groups and needed ethnic representation, must be encouraged to join our Branch as union actors. If they do not, the non-union talent pool will remain strong enough to discourage the use of union actors. As always, the members of other branches who live in Nevada need to be encouraged to join the Branch. Whether their manager or agent handles money in another city, or they still identify with where they used to live, we need their support and membership to strengthen the state in which they live! It is that simple…we need them.


Become Active in a Committee


As members, you can take the lead on all of these actions and more, in the name of strengthening our union, thanking our union for what it has done, giving back to our union and in the drive for more union work in Nevada. Individual actions are strong and require no cooperation. Groups and active committees can combine talents and drive into a sum greater than the individual parts. I encourage such a committee to be considered by the membership, and come from the membership level up.
Stand Up for Unions, 
Collective Bargaining Rights 
and Your Right to Work!
It cannot be said too often. Unions are under attack on all fronts with advancement of so called "right-to-work" legislation, forced give backs on negotiated contracts, threats to collective bargaining (the core of a unions existance) and justifying out very existance.

You need to act now to protect and advance unions.

The Screen Actors Guild depends on the ability to negotiate in good faith with the industry, contracts that make sure you are paid, your work envivorments are safe, you have water, are fed and are give the opportunity to rest and be professional at your craft. Collective bargaining and the right to strike are at the core of the very heart that makes it possible for SAG to negotiate for you and your pay, your careers.

Errosion in the private and public sector will lead to the loss of the ability of the Screen Actors Guild or any other union to work for the membership.

SAG does not give money to or endorse politicians or political parties. SAG takes a very small percentage of your dues (around one percent) for all legislative efforts. Our strength is our membership....you.

Take the time to stand up for unionism at this critical time for all unions.

Fighting On Line Piracy with Precision Accuarcy

Both branches of the Writers Guild, East and West, have joined in asking Washington to take action to protect intellectual property rights. Variety reports the two are taking a different direction than other entertainment Guilds:


The Writers Guild of America, West, pressed the White House for increased measures to fight online piracy, but also warned that too vigorous an approach to combating copyright infringement could be a "red herring" that favors media congloms and Internet providers at the expense of smaller players.



The WGAW, along with the Writers Guild of America, East, were the only two industry labor guilds not to take part in a separate letter sent to Espinel on Wednesday, in which a coalition of show biz unions, studios and record labels called for a wider range of steps to limit online piracy. 

Their concerns came in a letter sent to Victoria Espinel, the Obama administration's Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator, who has solicited comments as she draws up a strategic plan to fight copyright infringement.
"We believe that the proper approach to piracy, particularly online piracy, must focus not on prior restraint but rather on tools to enforce the law," the WGAW said in its letter. "Crafting solutions to piracy requires surgical precision, not a blow from a blunt object."

Celebrity steps down from SAG National Board

JoBeth Williams exits SAG national board

Actress busy with guild's awards committee, foundation

JoBeth Williams -- among the top vote-getters in recent Screen Actors Guild elections -- has resigned from SAG's national board after five years.

Williams has indicated she's ankling due to time constraints from serving as president of the SAG Foundation and on the SAG Awards Committee. At its most recent meeting, the guild's Hollywood Division board tapped Jane Austin to fill Williams' slot until the seat becomes open in next September's election.

Williams won a three-year term in 2005 when she received the largest number of votes out of 61 Hollywood board candidates. She was part of the Membership First faction, which gained control of the national board for the next three years on the promise of taking an aggressive stand at contract negotiations.

Williams trailed only Amy Brenneman and Adam Arkin in the 2008 election, winning another three-year term. Membership First lost its majority in that contest and saw further erosion in last fall's contest to a self-styled moderate coalition.

SAG's national board has 71 slots.

MEMBERSHIP FIRST SOLIDARITY CRACKING?

No, it’s not just about frustrated resignations. But we’re hearing increasing that A-listers recruited by Membership First to run for the SAG Board are having serious second thoughts about the group’s hard line, and are showing it with their votes
No longer, we’re told, can Membership First count on these votes to go with them in lock step on any issue. We’re told there have been a couple of quiet attempts to get the A-listers to come back to the fold, but that the “Come to Jesus” talk hasn’t been well received.
We’ll see…

Audition Dates Set for Little Theater Summer Show: "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change."

LVLT will hold open auditions for the hilarious musical revue “I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE on Sunday April 25 at 6pm and Monday April 26 at 7pm. We are seeking 4 (2 men and 2 women) extremely versatile actor/singers who can play and sing a variety of roles from children to senior citizens. Strong comic skills with the ability to handle tight a cappella harmonies and a wide variety of vocal styles are needed. Please be familiar with the music and prepare a vocal selection from the show. If that is not at all possible, please bring full sheet music with you. Readings will be from the script and some improv might be used at the auditions. All roles are open for and there are no “traditional casting” limitations.

“I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE” will go into rehearsal in May and play a 3 week run (Thurs-Sun) opening July 9. (There is a possibility for a 1 week extension, so please be available.)

How much will you pay to go to a movie?

3D Movie prices to go up, again and again!

Tickets to see a 3D film will go up another 25 to 50% as theaters seek to spend more on increasing the number of 3D screens and to make up for losses in other areas. Meanwhile, Variety reports that the quality of the 3D movies that are shown is liable to go down, as an inferrior technology is bieng used to add 3D o existing films and rerelease them, despite losing the inegrity of the oritional directors and producers.

NPR asks when will you stop buying tickets. At $10, at $20, at $50. Prices could rise into those premium levels as long as audiences are willing to fork out the dollars and distributors feel they need to take advantage of 3D to recover from upgraded and and other expenses.

In defense of the distributors, they have seen their side of the profit margin drop radically in this recession, as licensing fees and other expenses go up at levels far above inflation. Maybe that is why the kid who makes the decision as manager still has acne.

The return of Orson Wells

 

 

New Orson Wells Film for Christmas 2011

A new movie starring Orson Wells? The mastermind behind radio's "War of the Worlds" and the film "Citizen Kane" passed away in 1985. The Hollywood Reporter has this  story (link here):

The late Orson Welles is back in the movie business. A rare recording only recently discovered of the filmmaker narrating a children's Christmas novel is being used as the basis for a film. It is being produced by Drac Studios, best known as a special effects and makeup shop for movies like "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" but now moving into full-fledged production.

Drac is in development on "Christmas Tails," a 3D live-action/CG hybrid movie to be directed by Todd Tucker and narrated by Welles, who died in 1985.

"It's a movie about how Santa's dog saves Christmas, but on one level, this a story about the discovery of Orson's lost tapes," Drac president Harvey Lowry said. "This is a substantial find. It's something that a filmmaker dreams of."

The Secret Battle to Win Back Pilot Season

Apparently it’s sunk in at 5757 that just changing the leadership isn’t going to be enough, that the damage done during the Membership First/Allen years can’t be undone simply by showing that the current regime is nothing like the old one. So we’re hearing that intense lobbying is underway, with top SAG leaders pressuring the studios as hard as they can to bring more work back under SAG’s TV/Theatrical contract and away from AFTRA’s Exhibit A and Cable contracts.
The efforts have shown some chance of success, with studio execs promising SAG execs that the shift to AFTRA hasn’t closed the door on SAG’s participation in the television business. But the promise doesn’t come for free. Implicit is the message that if SAG’s radical fringe recaptures control of the union or tries to torpedo the joint SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical – Exhibit A negotiations, the shift will not be undone.  And their definition of “torpedo” is dangerously broad.
It’s also a dangerous political tightrope act for Unite for Strength. While the group positions itself as pro merger, it has apparently decided that since there doesn’t even appear to be a chance of talks for the next year, they’ll have to take action that could be read by AFTRA as hostile, or even raiding.
Fasten your seat belts again, folks.
We see more turbulence ahead.

Las Vegas Little Theatre announces auditions for Swisters, the winner of the LVLT New Works Competition. Auditions will be held on Monday, March 29th, and Tuesday, March 30th, at 7pm at the Las Vegas Little Theatre, 3920 Schiff Drive, Las Vegas, NV.

Swisters runs May 14th - 23rd, 2010 ,with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm. This production will be directed by Courtney Sheets. All roles are available.

Frankie goes to Jill’s home, locks her in a closet and commences to live the life that she believes rightfully belongs to her. She soon learns that being Jill means your Goth daughter is blackmailing you, your neighbors have involved you in plots of deception and murder and your husband can never be the man of your dreams.

AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ is the celebration of the outrageously prodigious and musical soul of 1930’s Harlem in a rollicking, swinging, finger-snapping revue that is still considered one of Broadway’s best. The inimitable Thomas “Fats” Waller rose to international fame during the Golden Age of the Cotton Club and the Savoy Ballroom, delivering that jumpin’ new beat, Swing. AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ evokes the delightful humor and infectious energy of this American original.

ARMELIA – African American Female. Age 25-45, Voluptuous and a trifle oversexed. Strong character skills a plus. Vocal range – high soprano with a belt.

CHARLAINE – African American Female. Age 18-30, Sweet, young and innocent ingenue. Classy with vivacious energy. Strong dancer (tap). Must handle comedy well. Vocal range – alto with “character” soprano notes.

KEN – African American Male. Age 25-45, Jovial, loud, larger-than-life—like Fats himself. Strong comedic acting ability a must. Any resemblance to Fats Waller a plus. Larger man a preference. Wide vocal range – bass to high baritone.

NELL – African American Female. Age 25-40. Confident, charming and worldly. Assured woman’s presence. Should be good at physical comedy. Vocal range – Alto with a high belt range.

PREPARATION:
Please prepare approximately 2 minutes of an upbeat jazz solo, traditional Broadway tune, or upbeat gospel song. An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music in your key. CD accompaniment will be allowed, however, sheet music is preferred. A capella auditions are highly discouraged. Headshot and Resume are requested.

ROALD DAHL’S timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life in this stage adaptation of CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, featuring the songs from the classic family film WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

Lyrics and Music by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. Adapted for the stage by Tim McDonald and Leslie Bricusse. Directed by Philip Shelburne.

AUDITION/CALLBACK DATES:

Thumbs down on program the gesture made famous

Disney TV / ABC has cancelled the longest running syndicated film review program "At the Movies". Siskel and Ebert were rival reviewers from two of the, at the time, four daily papers in Chicago, the powerful Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, With both of the founding talents, who began the show in the 1960's at Chicago Public Television Station WTTW Channel 11, out of the picture it was perhaps, only a matter of time before the show disapeared. The program went syndicated as "Sneak Preview" and was at its height in the 1980's. Siskel passed away and Ebert's throat cancer left him with an artificial voice. Then too the easy access to on-line reviews and programs patterned after the Siskel-Ebert rivalry have eroded interstes in their televised comments and the now easy to find elsewhere video clips shown on the program.

According to a press release reproduce on THR (the Hollywood Reporter on-line), from Disney-ABC Domestic Disribution:

After 24 seasons with us in national syndication, the highly regarded movie review show "At the Movies" (formerly known as "Siskel & Ebert" and "Ebert & Roeper") will air its last original broadcast the weekend of August 14, 2010. 
 
This was a very difficult decision, especially considering the program's rich history and iconic status within the entertainment industry, but from a business perspective it became clear this weekly, half-hour, broadcast syndication series was no longer sustainable. We gratefully acknowledge the outstanding work of the program's current co-hosts A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips and top-notch production staff, and it is with heartfelt appreciation that we extend very special thanks to the two brilliant, visionary and incomparable critics that started it all, Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel.
