Las Vegas Weekly Wraps Up Year in Theatre

Las Vegas Theatre Forum (ATCVegas) Las Vegas Weekly loosely wraps up the year with Theatreface author Jacob Coakley's 2010 nods to Las Vegas Little Theatre, Las Vegas Shakespeare Company, Insurgo Theater Movement, and Troy Heard.
Congrads!

(Note from Deanne: I FULLY agree with him on Hedwig. It was the theatre event of the decade, in my opinion. There is... NO reason that shows with such talent and potential like Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Naked Boy

Boardwalk Empire?

Looking for actors with either student film or theater acting experience who would like to submit for an audition for the HBO dramatic show "BOARDWALK EMPIRE". The show is seen weekly on HBO.

Please go ahead and send your email to CablePrimetime@gmail.com by Friday morning.

Note that this post is from Craigslist, so appropriate caution is recommended. Actors should never have to pay for an audition, and roles in major productions are most often submitted through SAG Agents, not directly to the producer. Do your homework.

Movie Casting (view with caution)

Many casting notices turn out to be solicitations for your money, to sign up and get constant offers or for not-yet proven on-line services. I trust Actors Access and CASTNOW, along with a few others. This project may be real, so I am leaving this posting up, but with the warning that you are routed to one such service.

Casting for a movie to be shot in Las Vegas at different places such as the Rio, MGM, and Bellagio. Main character would be Caucasian and should look between ages of 23-35. If you look this age still apply. Will be shot in 7 months. Also looking for a few more extras for movie. If you are interested in being part of this major movie join at http://www.tswplace.com and add a bio and shots for consideration. You will be contacted by a representative once you submit your information. Deadline to submit will be January 30th.

From Craigslist, so use appropriate precautions. Union actors should contact the SAG office if cast, and cannot work without a union contract (Rule One).

Changes loom for studios

Even with the economy rebounding, the majors are scrambling as never before to adjust to a fast-changing environment.
This past year saw profound changes in studios' focus, as marketing and merchandising became even higher priorities. And 3D was just the tip of the iceberg in terms of tech innovations; tech behemoths were knocking on studio doors offering new ways to distribute movie and TV franchises. The year saw Disney's Robert Iger and Relativity Media's Ryan Kavanaugh shake up the business profoundly -- Iger with a push for shorter windows for "Alice in Wonderland" and Kavanaugh with a five-year deal with Netflix. That pact will give the movie-rental service the ability to offer customers a slate of films shortly after they're released on DVD, bypassing paycablers HBO, Showtime, Starz and Epix. The exclusive pact with Relativity also enables Netflix to keep a list of films away from rival Redbox.

Oprah, Olympics, Comcast, MGM and TV

Small screen, big headaches. The end of a year always brings with it lots of stories looking back and looking ahead. After all, with little happening this week, papers and blogs (including this one) have to be filled with something. Variety looks at the big issues facing the TV business next year, including how a Simon Cowell-less "American Idol" will perform and what Comcast will have in store for NBC Universal. Personally, I think the game changers in 2011 will be the changing ways people get their content and the havoc that will wreak on traditional economic models.

No Gain but No Loss.
According to Hollywood.com, 2010′s gross will be just below 2009′s record of $10.6 billion.
New owners mean a new building. MGM, which is looking to be born again in 2011 with its new management, is moving its corporate headquarters from Century City to Beverly Hills. According to the Beverly Hills Courier, MGM is going to move into the office space that was originally built for William Morris Endeavor, which had been trying to get out of relocating to the building.
Jumping the gun. As if the Broadway production of "Spider-Man" didn't have enough problems, now two prominent theater critics, Bloomberg's Jeremy Gerard and Linda Winer of Newsday, broke the unwritten rule against reviewing shows before their official premiere. The show blasted the move, and some other media watchers also took aim at the two. More on the brouhaha from the Hollywood Reporter and some vitriol from Dave Poland's Hot Blog.
Carrying the torch or snuffing the flame? One of the first decisions cable giant Comcast Corp. will have to make when it takes control of NBC Universal is whether it will bid on the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games. NBC has been home to all things Olympic for more than a decade but at a high cost. The 2010 Games lost more than $200 million, and although they are ratings gold, the long-term value to a broadcast network is debatable. The New York Times looks at the pros and cons for Comcast when it comes to the Olympics.
It's Oprah's world, we just live in it. We promised you a story on OWN, the new cable network from Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications launching New Year's Day, every day this week, and we're two days away from completing our mission. This story on OWN comes from Gary Levin atUSA Today. Winfrey tells Levin that making the decision to create a cable network has not been worry free. "I would literally wake up in the middle of the night clutching my chest, thinking, 'What have I done? What have I taken on?' " she said. Meanwhile, in some good news for OWN, the channel cut a distribution deal with New York-based cable operator Cablevision Systems, which has subscribers in the Bronx and Brooklyn as well as the hoity-toity Hamptons. More on that deal from the Los Angeles Times.

Star Wars Visual Effects Artist RIP

The Oscar winner also was nominated for his work on
"Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

Grant McCune, the special effects artist who won an Oscar for his model work on Star Wars, has died of pancreatic cancer. He was 67.

McCune, who died Monday at his home in Hidden Hills, Calif., won the visual effects Oscar for 1977's Star Wars, the original installment in George Lucas' six-film franchise.

McCune, who created scenes with models and miniature films for more than three decades, also was nominated for an Oscar in 1980 for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Born March 27, 1943, McCune earned a bachelor's degree in biology at California State University in Northridge. He got his start in special effects in the 1970s when he and Bill Shourt were hired to make a realistic giant white shark model for Steven Spielberg's Jaws, though neither was credited on the film.
He later became a partner at Apogee Prods., where he worked on three dozen films, including Die Hard, Never Say Never Again, Big, Space Balls and Caddyshack.

McCune went on to launch his own company, Grant McCune Design, which handled 20-plus films, including Speed, Batman Forever, U.S. Marshals, Red Planet, U-571, Spider-Man and Serenity.

The above is from the Hollywood Reporter. For a photo of McCune with R2D2, the complete story and other news from The Hollywood Reporter, click here.

Hairspray delights audiences by sweeping them away to 1960's Baltimore, where the 50's are out - and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity.
Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?

Song, Dance, Theater to Benefit Education

Once again Tia Taymar from the Miley Achievement Center and Marko Westwood, Artistic Director of Nevada Repertory Dance Theater are getting together to produce an enchanting evening of song, music and dance within the intimate setting of the Onyx Theater.  “This time around we decided to have the choreographers use musical theater songs, from stage or film, as their creative springboard”, says Ms. Taymar.  The use of live music and vocals are an integral part of Musical Theater and will accompany several of the dance numbers performed throughout the night.  Ten choreographers have donated their time to produce work for this performance and all proceeds, above and beyond general operating costs, will go to the Miley Achievement Center.  However, the space has once more been graciously donated to the performers by Mike Morse, owner of the Rack and Onyx Theater.  “Without individuals like Mike Morse, Tia and my fellow artists we would never be able to raise awareness and much needed funding to such a worthy cause”, explains Mr. Westwood.  “Sometimes this is the true power of art and what it can do for others”, he adds.

Those choreographing this year will be NRDT company members Tiffany Caudullo, Serena Bartholomew, Petrina Olson, Onishia Murillo, Anna Michele Fazio and NRDT's Artistic Director; Marko Westwood.  Also included in the evenings presentations will be Ava Galore singing a number from Mack and Mabel, cast members from Rag Tag Entertainment's upcoming production of RENT, the musical talents of Arles Estate and two wonderful violin solos by company member Tiffany Caudillo.
