Join us for RagTag Entertainment's SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM on Tuesdays in July beginning July 12 @ 8pm inside the Ovation Room at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson!

This production features:

Michael Strelo-Smith
Francesca Camus
Kara von Aschwege

and Tony Lasorsa on piano!!

The sophistication, wit, insight, heart and genius of Broadway's most innovative and influential artist is at the center of this tribute to composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

This dazzling array of some of Sondheim's best-known songs features numbers from landmark shows that revolutionized the musical theatre with their masterful craft and astounding creativity: COMPANY, FOLLIES, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, and ANYONE CAN WHISTLE not to mention the classics written with musical theatre giants Leonard Bernstein, Jule Styne and Richard Rodgers, WEST SIDE STORY, GYPSY, and DO I HEAR A WALTZ? Also included are delectable rarities from the television musical Evening Primrose and the hit revue The Mad Show.

NOTE: I have the honor of having seen this show with the Great Cyril Ritchard.  I was not at the show where he had a heart attack in Act I and passed away right after the show (true showman, he finished the performance). I saw the show a second time when less than a month later it reopened with Burr Tilstrom and the Kulapolitan Players. I remember they added a number sung by Kukla to the woman who stood in for Fran, a song a young Sondheim wrote for Kukla but remained unopened in a box for decades (unsolicited). I also remember that the audience suspended disbelief and saw that little clown, with only a painted mouth, actually sing "Send in the Clowns"

Remembering Josh Dufort on his Birthday (with improv)

Diversity in the Workplace: Take One

SAG's sister union ACTRA produces promos for Canada Multiculturalism Day

The Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists’ National Diversity Committee has debuted a new video in honor of Canadian Multiculturalism Day, which is observed each year on June 27.

The video, Diversity in the Workplace: Take One, features a crew filming an office scene, when the director interrupts.

“What’s the matter with that one?” asks one of the actors.

“It was, well … bland,” the director replies.

Someone off camera hands the director a pair of “ACTRA Diversity” sunglasses. Suddenly, the white cast and crew is replaced with a multicultural one. The video ends with the phrase, “Diversity works for all of us.”

The video was created in support of the Inclusion in the Arts & Media of People with Disabilities (I AM PWD) campaign, which is a joint effort of Screen Actors Guild, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists and Actors’ Equity Association. The campaign seeks to expand opportunities for people with disabilities and to bring media and public attention to the issues of media access, inclusion and accuracy for people with disabilities.

ACTRA previously created a video called The Audition, highlighting accessibility for the disabled.

Canadian Multiculturalism Day has been celebrated since 2003, and is a time to honor the contributions of Canada’s diverse population.

California state film tax credits pumped $3.8 billion into California's economy

California's film tax credit program is giving taxpayers a bang for their buck. So says a newly-released study from the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. , showing the state's tax credit program pumped $3.8 billion into the California economy and created more than 20,000 jobs in the last two years.
Based on an analysis  of expenditures from nine projects that received tax credits from the state in the first two years of the program , the LAEDC found that for each tax dollar allocated the local and state governments get back at least $1.13 in tax revenue, while the total GDP in the state will increase by $8.48.

Bob Pisano to resign as president of the MPAA

Bob Pisano is stepping down as president and chief operating officer of the Motion Picture Assn. of America after nearly six years on the job.
Pisano's departure was expected after the board of the MPAA, which acts as Hollywood's chief lobbying arm on Capitol Hill, tapped former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd as its chairman and chief executive earlier this year.
The MPAA is not expected to fill Pisano's position. To continue reading go to the LA Times Company Town Blog by clicking here.
Pisano is a former National Executive Director and CEO of the Screen Actors Guild, overseeing a major reorganization of the staff, union board and constitution, some feel laid the groundwork for the rough political waters of the past decade.

SAG 2nd National VP and NYC President Mike Hodge

Two Teamsters are running against incumbent President James P. Hoffa.

From the Hollywood Reporter (click here, subscription may be required)

Teamsters general president James P. Hoffa, who has led the international union for twelve years, is expected to face two challengers in this fall’s elections, reports the New York Times: Sandy Pope, who heads a local in Queens, and Fred Gegare, who heads a Wisconsin local. Both are expected to be nominated on Thursday at the union’s convention in Las Vegas.
A Hoffa ally dismissed Pope’s candidacy, and an academic expert quoted by the Times said Hoffa probably “has a lock on the presidency.” It would seem that Pope and Gegare might split the anti-Hoffa vote, though Pope argued that the split would be between Hoffa and Gegare, since the latter is a former Hoffa supporter.
Neither Pope nor Gegare appear to be members of either of the Teamsters’ entertainment locals, Local 399 in Los Angeles and Local 817 in New York.

Actors Equity Association (AEA) Union representing stage actors. AEA- Actors' Equity Association is often called simply "Equity". Equity represents stage actors, select stage hands and live theater professionals. Equity organizes employer by employer, or by geographic area, whereas SAG and AFTRA organize by primarily by industry.
To join Equity requires qulifying through a number of possible tracks of membership. The most common is to earn "equity points" through waiver or working in Equity productions. Internships and other avenues remain open for select areas of Equity membership.
There is no chapter in Nevada, but there is an equity organization and there is an association of Equity talent. The Nevada Equity information line is (702) 452-4200.
Equity for Nevada  includes regional casting calls, since there is little equity work other than “guest artist” contracts in Nevada. The fixed productions on the Strip are affiliated with Equity in New York or Los Angeles, but must have local auditions according to the most common Equity contracts. In England and much of the British Commonwealth, Equity has jurisdiction over film and television as well as theater. Most foreign Equity film or TV contracts are buy-outs and do not contain the residuals or use fees found in American union contracts.
