Starting Friday, May 31, Company Town will feature a weekly cartoon about the entertainment business from David Horsey, a lifelong fan of movies and music as well as a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist.
In this, his first installment, Horsey looks at a tried-and-true Hollywood movie scenario -- that of a desperate movie executive, hungry for a hit but over budget on his huge summer movie, saved at the box office by a big screen superhero.
Horsey joined The Times in January 2012. His political cartoons appear on the Top of the Ticket blog and on The Times editorial page each Friday. His Horsey on Hollywood cartoons can also be found in the Sunday Calendar section of the Los Angeles Times.

The sun rises in the east, and so goes Hollywood. Further deepening ties between Hollywood and China, Legendary Entertainment's Chinese film venture has signed a multiyear agreement to co-produce movies with China's largest film distributor.
This agreement with Legendary East marks the first time China Film Co. Ltd. has signed a long-term production deal with a Chinese or international partner.
Formed in 2011, Legendary East is a spinoff of Legendary Pictures, the Burbank-based film finance and production company behind the "Dark Knight Rises" and "Hangover" movies, and the upcoming "Man of Steel."  Legendary is teaming up with a company that is controlled by the powerful state film distributor China Film Group (CFGC), which alsorecently partnered with a joint venture involving Glendale-based DreamWorks Animation to jointly produce a movie called "Tibet Code."
DreamWorks and Walt Disney Studios both have joint venture deals in China and last year News Corp. acquired a 20% stake in Chinese film distributor Bona Film Group.
The Legendary agreement calls for the two companies to fund the development and production of multiple "tentpole scale" films over an initial three-year term, with each film specifically planned as a U.S.-China co-production. Such films are not subject to the foreign film quotas that limit how much revenue foreign film producers can collect from their movies in China.
The signing was officiated Thursday at a ceremony in Beijing by Legendary Entertainment founder and Chief Executive Officer Thomas Tull, and Han Sanping, chairman of China Film Co. Ltd.
"There can be no doubt that this is one of the most important collaborations for CFGC in the coming years,'' Sanping said in a statement. "We believe that through strong collaboration between CFGC and Legendary East, we will be able to make films that are more appealing to filmgoers, creating new genres that, through the magic of film, bring greater variety to audiences around the world.” 
Tull added: “We truly value the opportunity to work with China Film Co. Ltd., a leader in the vital Chinese motion picture marketplace. We look forward to combining our very complementary strengths to serve the global entertainment market.” 
China is now the top theatrical market outside North America, generating an estimated $2.7 billion in ticket sales in 2012, according to the Motion Picture Assn. of America.

Fast and Furious 6

The Skinny: You know you're getting old when the idea of getting yet another box to make watching TV and finding content online easy just sounds like a lot of work. Friday's headlines include a preview of the weekend box office and reviews of "After Earth" and "The East." Also starting today, Company Town offers a few laughs for you courtesy of Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist David Horsey. His take will appear on Fridays. Daily Dose: Reporters who headed out to CBS on Thursday for a preview of its big summer series "Under the Dome" also got to see Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer and Xbox Entertainment Studios President Nancy Tellem heading into the network for a meeting. Tellem, of course, is a former CBS Entertainment president. Odds are she wasn't there just to give Ballmer a tour of her old offices, but they probably did say hi to her old boss Les Moonves, the CEO of CBS. Naturally, this being the digital age, the sighting was quickly tweeted by TV Guide's Michael Schneider.

Still furious. "Fast & Furious 6" is expected to keep its pedal to the metal this weekend at the box office. According to industry projections, "F&F6" should take in $40 million and perhaps as much as $50 million this weekend. Last weekend it made nearly $120 million. Coming in second will be "After Earth," a science-fiction movie starring Will Smith and his son Jaden. Critics didn't get to screen the movie until earlier this week and that's never a good sign. Sony thinks "After Earth" could come in around $40 million, but other pundits think the movie will barely crack $30 million. Young adult movies are the ticket for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., maker of the “Twilight” and “Hunger Games” sagas.
Movies based on teen-oriented books helped the company swing to profit in its fiscal fourth quarter and it’s looking ahead to similar offerings that will debut this year and next.
“We're obviously not the only ones mining the young adult space, but owning the top young adult franchises, ‘Hunger Games’ and ‘Twilight,’ gives us enormous catalyst,” said Jon Feltheimer, Lions Gate’s chief executive officer, in a conference call with analysts Friday.
Sure, there’s no new Twilight movie coming out this year. The teen vampire saga wrapped up with the release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part II” last year.
But “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” the second installment of the dystopian franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence, is set for release in November, as is “Ender’s Game,” based on the science fiction novel by Orson Scott Card.
Lions Gate’s January 2012 acquisition of Summit Entertainment brought in not only the “Twilight” films and “Ender’s Game,” but also “Divergent” -- based on another series of popular young adult books -- which will open in 2014.
Feltheimer said the first two books in the "Divergent" trilogy have sold more than 3 million copies. The third book, titled "Allegiant," will be published in October.
Lions Gate’s stock shot up Friday after the call, on earnings and revenue that exceeded analysts’ expectations. Shares of Lions Gate rose 7.6% to $30.16 in late-morning trading in New York.
Lions Gate on Thursday reported fourth-quarter net income of $163 million, or $1.10 a share, compared with a loss of $22.7 million, or 17 cents, for the same period last year.
Adjusted net income for the quarter ended March 31 was $89.6 million, or 61 cents a share, beating analyst estimates of 47 cents.
Revenue increased 22% to $785.7 million, beating analyst estimates of $753 million.

Don't hold your breath for HBO Go stand-alone service

There’s little chance that HBO will offer its content online to non-TV subscribers in the U.S. any time soon.
Home Box Office Chief Executive Officer Richard Plepler, in remarks at Nomura’s Media & Telecommunications Summit in New York on Thursday, said the company is focused on getting more U.S. households to subscribe rather than letting people pay to watch its content online without buying a satellite or cable TV package.
“For right now, we have the right model for our business,” he said. “There are 70 million homes in the U.S. that don’t have HBO. We think there’s a lot of opportunity in that 70 million.”
Non-subscribing fans of HBO shows such as “Game of Thrones” and “Girls” have been clamoring for a way to keep up with the shows without paying for other channels. HBO Go is available on the web and on mobile devices, but only available to viewers who already have subscriptions to a big pay-TV service.
“For us, exclusivity is all,” Plepler said. “HBO Go, which has our entire library, is something we look to monetize more going forward.” 
Currently, viewers in Nordic countries are the only ones in the world who have the option to watch HBO Go without having to buy a broader pay-TV package.
Plepler’s remarks echo recent comments by Jeff Bewkes, chief executive officer of HBO parent Time Warner. He downplayed the idea that HBO would offer its programming through broadband alone. "We don’t think it makes sense," Bewkes said in an earnings call.
Plepler said the company’s tactic in the Nordic region is succeeding, but that every market is different and the stand-alone service may not work elsewhere. Still, he said, the company is evaluating what services will work in which markets.
“It’s very early days, but it’s going very well,” he said. “It’s a classic example of being ambidextrous.” 


Tough sell. Sony Chief Executive Kazuo Hirai said the company will give some thought to investor Daniel Loeb's pitch that the consumer electronics and entertainment giant should spin off a portion of its movie and TV businesses. However, Hirai indicated in an interview that he thinks the company is fine now and that a breakup would hinder it. More on Hirai's remarks from the Wall Street Journal.

Sony to help trick out 49ers' new Levi's Stadium

The San Francisco 49ers are looking for a little digital magic to lure fans to the new Levi's Stadium, which opens next year in Santa Clara.
After all, the team ranked 12th in attendance -- out of 32 teams -- in 2012, in a year when one of theNFL's most exciting quarterbacks, Colin Kaepernick, took the 49ers to the Super Bowl. (We will not revisit the pain of the loss to the Baltimore Ravens). 
The Niners trailed football-crazy Dallas, both New York teams, Washington Redskins, Denver and a host of others when it comes to putting fans in seats last year, according to the NFL's attendance figures.
So 49ers Chief Executive Jed York looked to modernize the live sports experience, in partnership with consumer electronics giant Sony, to add a little pizazz. The team's website notes that the $1.2-billion stadium will showcase the best of Silicon Valley tech.

"This is all about making sure we bring a really new experience," said Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai, noting that the company, which has outfitted 25 stadiums in North America, expected this project to go "beyond what we've done, traditionally."
Hirai talked about adding technology that allows fans to tailor their experience at the game: delivering player statistics on-demand, offering multiple camera angles of the on-field play or an isolated close-up of a single player, like tight end Vernon Davis.
Fans might choose to listen to their favorite sportscaster calling the game on TV or radio, as it unfolds in front of them in the stadium. Perhaps Bay Area types, who have become obsessed with devices that monitor sleep, exercise, heart rate and blood pressure, might want to keep tabs on a player's heart rate throughout the game.
York said the experience would be device agnostic: the experiences won't be restricted to Sony tablets or smartphones. Though Sony clearly views the partnership as a branding exercise.
Sony plans to showcase its budding 4K televisions, which afford even more lush picture quality than high-definition TVs and Blu-ray discs. There may also be opportunities for Niners fans to test new Xperia smartphone or tablet (which Hirai joked is both waterproof, and presumably beer-resistant, too).
"Getting that branding out there is important," Hirai said.

Maybe they'll go on tour together. Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj both said they are leaving "American Idol" after just one season on the musical talent show. The departures had been expected and follow the exits of fellow judge Randy Jackson and Mike Darnell, the Fox TV executive who oversaw the show for the network. Selling Netflix shares because of "Arrested Development"reviews? You've made a huge mistake, according to chief content officer Ted Sarandos. 
Sarandos on Thursday made fun of reports that mixed reviews for its reboot of the cult comedy series drove down the company’s stock.
Shares of Netflix fell more than 6% to $214.19 a share Tuesday, the first day of trading after the company made all 15 episodes of the show’s long-awaited fourth season available Sunday for streaming online.
Multiple news reports attributed the stock drop to mixed reviews from publications such as the New York Times.
In remarks to investors at Nomura’s Media & Telecom Summit in New York, Sarandos gave his reaction to those assertions: C'mon. 
“I hope you guys are not really trading on New York Times reviews,” he said. “It’s not a Broadway show. It’s not going to close because of a bad review.”
New York Times writer Mike Hale critiqued the show’s pacing, saying, “Everything feels slowed down and dragged out.” At the same time, he wrote, “It feels forced and overly complicated.”
But Sarandos wasn’t buying the idea that investors were selling based on critical pans, noting that some of the reviews were positive, including one from the Washington Post.
He argued that the new season was not designed for binge-watching and that reviewers who allowed themselves to digest the episodes for longer enjoyed the show more. Besides, he argued, that’s not how most fans are consuming it.
“A small percentage of people burned through all of them,” he said.
At the same time, Sarandos said there are no other shows on deck to be resurrected by Netflix. The critically beloved "Arrested Development" was canceled by Fox in 2006 because of poor ratings, but it developed a following that grew after its cancellation.
Sarandos said there have been calls the revive the short-lived science-fiction series "Firefly" – also a niche favorite – but it wouldn’t make sense for Netflix to do it. 
“It’s a really rare bird," he said of "Arrested Development." "TV cults get more intense but typically smaller over time. 'Arrested Development' was unique because the audience grew dramatically when it was off the air.”

It appears caps on free radio streams have not stoppedPandora’s growth in mobile.
The music streaming company is now the top-grossing publisher in Apple’s iOS App Store, based on monthly revenue, according to app analytics firm App Annie.
Pandora -- which makes its money from premium subscribers and advertising revenue -- topped the list for the first time, App Annie said in its April index posted Thursday. It ranked fourth in the Google Play store, behind the Japanese social networking sites LINE and GREE, and the South Korean messaging service Kakao.
Pandora’s mobile revenue has increased since it put new limits on the amount of time users can stream music from the service for free, App Annie said on its website.
Pandora recently began limiting free access to 40 hours a month for mobile users, having imposed a similar cap in 2009 only to lift it two years later.
Despite the chart-topping gross sales, it’s been hard for the company to make profits even as revenue and subscribers continue to increase.
The company recently reported first quarter revenue that grew 55% from the same period last year to $125.5 million as Pandora picked up subscribers. Mobile revenue nearly doubled to $83.9 million.
Still, the company’s net loss widened to $28.6 million from $20.2 million a year earlier. 



Troupers are Easily Trumped When Actors Flood the Market

Not written in stone. The broadcast networks have presented fall schedules to advertisers and have sent pilots of the new shows to the media. Next up is the annual ritual of recasting roles. This happens for lots of reasons. An actor who wasn't available when the pilot was being made is suddenly free because their new show didn't get picked up. Perhaps testing showed that the audience didn't like the freckles on the woman playing the best friend. It can be totally random and probably drives the talent community crazy. It's like being told, "It's not you, it's me." Variety columnist Brian Lowry on the cruel world of recasting.

Oregon Governor Urges SAG-AFTRA to Keep Portland Office Open

Upping the stakes in the effort to maintain their local office, members of a group dubbed "Occupy Portland SAG-AFTRA" have secured the support of Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber, the group announced Friday.
Calling the matter an "economic issue," the governor said in aletter to the union’s national executive director, David White, "Your union's presence in this state is an economic asset for Oregon, and closing this office is problematic for Oregon as would be the loss of any business."
The letter adds, "I urge SAG-AFTRA to reconsider its decision to leave Oregon without a local office so that we can continue to grow this industry, create good jobs and increase SAG-AFTRA membership in our state."
Portland’s is one of 10 offices nationwide – out of 25 total – that the union is closing in a budget and "restructuring" move. The 66 percent to 33 percent boardroom vote to close offices was almost exclusively supported by Los Angeles and New York board members. The campaign to save the Portland office was initiated by two SAG-AFTRA national board members from Portland, Mary McDonald-Lewis and Chrisse Roccaro.
In response, a SAG-AFTRA spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter, "We love the fact that Governor Kitzhaber is so supportive of our members and appreciate his desire to expand the work of our industry in Oregon. We agree with him and expect to continue our good work with his offices to advance the interests of our membership."
However, the statement added, "Whether or not we have a physical office in this state will not change this fact. We are working to bring more effective services and support to all SAG-AFTRA members, wherever they live and work around the globe."
The spokesperson also challenged the premise that a physical office was necessary in order to foster production activity. In addition, White has previously said that office closures will not mean reduced core services or scaled-back representation in the long-term.
McDonald-Lewis has disputed the union’s cost-saving rationale for the closures, arguing that any reduction in costs would be offset by the cost of severance payments, buyout of real estate leases, selling of office equipment at fire-sale prices, reduction in new membership and a spike in non-union work.
"Merger was sold on a false promise," she said, arguing that there was never any statement that merger would result in office closures.
Several weeks earlier, the Oregon Media Production Association’s executive director, Tom McFadden, also wrote White and urged that the office remain open. "As Director of an organization that represents the business interests of Oregon's production industry, my request may be found odd," McFadden wrote. "However, we feel that growing and maintaining the U.S. share of business means supporting and protecting labor standards while holding performers to the standards of professionalism that our industry requires in those locations where the business is practiced."
In a statement Friday, McDonald-Lewis said that SAG-AFTRA had "ordered [executive directorNathaniel] Applefield and the council off the premises at 5:00PM sharp," but McDonald-Lewis and Roccaro said that wasn't quite the way the last few hours were going to go down. They’re having a live-streamed goodbye party to honor Applefield and bid farewell to the office.
"This is our house," says McDonald-Lewis. "We'll leave when the party’s over." Roccaro adds: "The band doesn’t even set up until 6:00!"
And the name of the band? General Strike.
