I saw the original workshop "Grease" at the Kingston Mines Theater in Chicago, where I later ushered and performed. It included penny pitching and lots of real references later cut from the show. When the road company hit Chicago anyone who went to the high school Rydell is based on or who recognized themselves on the proscemium arch photos had free tickets (the later a VIP trip to new York to see the show on Broadway and more). The movie later took all Chicago and Hew York realism away and ruined the play! So much for Sandy Dumbrowsk and the hot rod that never did run. If you know Oak Street Beach you know the story of how Sandy met her love and why she decided to transfer from Catholic School to Rydell.
