Actors and Acting: Links for more on acting and resources

Rule One: do not work non-union

We Stand Together: The Screen Actors Guild

Rule One is one of the founding principles and strengths of our union: we stand together as actors and do not work without a Guild contract.

If you are good at what you do, you should value your time and talents. Professionals join the union and the pay and working conditions unions helps guarantee.

Here is a short video production I've done especially for YouTube members. It shows the first experimental movie that Thomas Edison made in 1889. In 1878, British photographer Eadweard Muybridge made a series of still photographs of a horse that when viewed in sequence, appeared to be galloping. Edison felt this was too cumbersome for practical use and soon developed a system for "motion" pictures, based on his wax cylinder for phonographs. Thus you will see the two short sequences still in existance of the very first American motion picture from 1889.

LifeRaft: How to Self-Tape Auditions: Free Full Seminars on-line from the SAG Foundation.

View past the intro and there is a full two hour seminar offered free through the SAG Foundation.

This one in a series of seminars offered at the following address: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D79zOFTiLfs&list=PLTKUQPif_Oft8BKIeW4mrnkrPRBgpB6c2

Self-taped auditions are becoming more and more common. Though the technology is easy to come by, one still needs to know the technical skills. In part one of this series, we will show you how to properly set up the equipment as well as cover other technical details one needs to know to properly self-tape an audition. Look for part two in the series, post-production editing and uploading your audition, in April.

Meet the Speaker:

Sharon Garrison is a proud member of SAG, AFTRA and AEA for over 30 years, Sharon "pays it forward" these days by serving as secretary on the Dallas local SAG-AFTRA Board and chairing the SAG-AFTRA ProACT committee (Professional Actor Career Training) which offers panels and workshops on important film industry issues in the North Texas area. Sharon offers taping and audition coaching services available in both the North Texas and New Orleans areas and has put hundreds of actors (both young and more mature) on tape for casting directors in virtually every market in the country, from Los Angeles to New York.

Do's and Don't of Taping Auditions

Editors NOTE: I strongly recommend you add this to your blog list to check on a regular basis. I have added a link in the right hand column of this blog. Material is to be credited to the site link above and Showfax.  The authors are highly recommended by actors I trust.

This casting process on this film was not unique. I have now cast many projects wherein the technical savor faire of the actor was what got him or her the role over someone else who may have been just as good, but who was intimidated by the technical aspect of auditioning online.

John Noughton in the Observer recently noted that "In spite of all the answers the Internet has given us, its full potential to transform our lives remains the great unknown."Well I know that the Internet has transformed my life, because when I started casting in the '90s, it would have been impossible to cast a project in my pajamas, like I did this winter. Okay so I'm exaggerating, I did get out of my pajamas a few times to walk my dog. But I swear I never had to leave my desk in Prague when I cast American, British, and German actors onSniper: Reloaded, which shot in Johannesburg, South Africa.
